Recently, I have decided to work for myself after working for a company for 15 years. People constantly ask me how I like it and what the difference is between working for myself and working for someone else. The main difference is - freedom: Freedom from ‘department-ation’, job titles and job descriptions, schedules, office politics, and red tape. I had flexibility at my previous company, but now I have freedom.
The freedom, however, is not free. I miss the paychecks. I miss the resources. I miss delegating. I miss "running it by someone". I miss the co-workers.
The freedom, however, is worth the price. I enjoy thinking of an idea and then making it happen without meetings. I enjoy eating lunch at home. I enjoy spending more with my children during the day and working at night. I enjoy wearing black shirt and jeans everyday. I enjoy drive to work when there is no traffic.
Again, let me say again - I do miss that paycheck very much.
And I am working very hard to not miss that paycheck for long.
Thanks for stopping by my place!
ReplyDeleteYou're right. Being free of other's work whims is enlightening, but having to work harder for yourself puts a new spin on self-employment!
This is why I still work and can't quit. I am terrified of losing insurance and paycheck!
ReplyDeleteHi Mother of Two,
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. I enjoyed your blog very much.
I was interested in this post because I have been working from home for about 6 months now. Its been pretty difficult. But I really appreciate the time with my son.
Hi MoT, thanks for stopping by my blog. I miss the paycheck too, very much. But getting to watch the kids grow is worth it ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm about to change over to woking for myself rather than a large company myself. Didn't do you it, but I'm close. And yea. It's scary!
